Seat belt certification and safety standards

Seat belts are designed to protect people by keeping them in their seats, preventing or reducing injuries in the event of an accident. They ensure that there is as little contact as possible between the occupant and the interior of the vehicle and significantly reduce the risk of being ejected from a vehicle.

All our seat belt products are manufactured, tested and approved to European standards, as and when required, for example ECE R16.

All the seat belts offered on our site are provided with a certificate label, showing the country of certification, the retractor/seat belt type and the certificate number. All certificates for our products can be requested from us.

Explanation of test requirements:
The E-mark or ECE stands for Economic Commission for Europe (Economic Commission of Europe, referred to as ECE). These regulations issued by (Regulation). ECE, including the current 27 countries of the EU, excluding EU Member States, including Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, Africa and other countries.

You can find more information about the testing requirements by clicking on each link.

ECE Regulation 14: Anchorages for cars, coaches, etc. for road use in the UK and Europe.

ECE regulation 16: Restriction of cars, coaches etc. for on-road use in the UK and Europe.

Explanation of the certificate label

A capital "E" marks ECE approval according to Regulation 16. The number after the "E" indicates the country where it was tested/approved.

E1 – Germany, E2 – France, E3 – Italy, E4 – Netherlands, E5 – Sweden, E6 – Belgium, E7 – Hungary, E8 – Czech Republic, E9 – Spain, E11 – Great Britain, E12 – Austria, E13 – Luxembourg, E17 – Finland, E18 – Denmark, E21 – Portugal, E23 – Greece, E24 – Ireland.

The code after the E(number) indicates the approval/certificate number. This is unique per type of belt.

The meaning of “Ar4m” and other symbols is explained below:

A = 3- or 4-point mounting lap and diagonal belt. B = 2-point mounting hip belt. r = Seat belt with retractor. 3 = Auto-locking retractor. 4 = Retractor with emergency lock. m = Multiple sensitivity. S = special type of belt. 4N = Lower sensitivity retractor.

CE marking

Seat belts have been independently tested and certified to European Directive 77/541 and/or Regulation 16 – they may not have a CE mark.

CE marking is in many cases a subjective analysis with limited or no testing and no guaranteed basic performance.
